I just want to know if tinned spagetti loops (the ones in a tomato based sauce) are bad/good/ok for my 1 and a half year old daughter? She loves them and i tend to feed them with her meals on a daily basis, is this ok? its not always every day but most days she will have them with one of her meals.
Thanks.
Are tinned spagetti loops bad for my 1 1/2 year old?
Yes, I would say they're fine aslong as you feed her all the different food groups, but you've stated that she gets it so I'm sure its fine.
Reply:they arent bad, just make sure shes getting food from all the food groups with em! Limit the amt if you are concerned...but hey, if she loves em, stick with em! it wont last forever, she will go through stages!
Reply:My nearly 4 year old loves them as well and frankly, as long as they eat it then it can't be bad because they're difficult to feed at the best of times! I'm sure that you compensate for the old 5 a day fruit and veg in other ways (isn't it hard!!??), and I believe that these spaghetti hoops are low in salt and stuff nowadays.
Reply:Hey!
I'd suggest trying to even out how often she eats them-especially the Asda home brand type.
Reason being, much more salt and sugar are added to homebrand tins of beans/spaghetti/spaghetti hoops.
A smaller sized tin of Heinz spaghetti hoops in Asda's is 37p though, so getting those might be better as hey have a reduced sugar and salt range.
They're a bit more pricey, but they're certainly less bad for your daughter. (That said, tinned foods aren't wonderful in themselves and you'd be right in giving your baby a balanced diet of fruit and veg, as you have been.)
Reply:I would limit ANYTHING that comes in a can and has lots of perservatives. My son likes Spaghetti Os and I just try to not give it to him more than once a week.
Reply:I know that many of them have vitamins added and some are low sodium. It's the sodium and preservatives you have to watch out for. If she is eating a variety of healthy foods as well, it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe try to limit processed foods to two to three times a week. But, if that's all she will eat, then I would stop buying it and see if she will eat something healthier. Have you tried the Gerber graduates spaghetti yet. My daughter loved them and they seem to be a bit healthier than spaghettiOs.
After reading your edit - no worries on the o's. Everything in moderation. Just enjoy that babies smiling orange spaghetti covered face!!
Reply:Check the label - those things are full of salt and sugar, preservatives and god knows what...for a child that young, I would advise no more than 2 cans per week - maybe you can split them up and give her a couple of tablespoons each day until she gets sick of it and moves on to other food.
Reply:As part of a balanced diet.... theyre fine.
Maybe worth looking for a brand with lower salt and additive levels ? orgsanic maybe ? up to you.
My kid's 4 and been eating stuff like that with no harm.
Reply:they arent bad for them if you give them in moderation my little boy loves all spagetti shapes but still eats meat and veg!!!
Reply:I'm no expert but I don't think they are really bad but if you are concerned, try to look for varieties with less salt and sugar.
Reply:try washing some of the sauce off and gradually move her on to real pasta
Reply:there is nothing wrong with these
My son who is 14 months loves them cant get enough in fact!!
Maybe try and vary her diet a bit more and only let her eat them maybe twice a week so that way she can learn what different flavours she likes
Reply:Naw, they're not too bad. Have you tried her with baked beans yet? They are full of goodness!
Reply:I think once a week is more than enough. Tins contain more salt to preserve the food.
Reply:your child is growing fine? does your health visitor have any concerns? my little boy will only eat beans from netto he has them at least once a day they wont do your child any harm at all
Reply:you sound like a very level headed person. Your daughter will grow up healthy and happy even on asdas own brand!! I can assure you....my daughter is perfectly happy and she eats a balanced diet which does include tinned foods and a few takeaways. Your doing a good job I'm sure of it. x
