Are glass fish really are being injected with color dye and being called fruit loops?

Yes, what you have is a white skirt tetra that has been dyed and called a fruit loop tetra. There are quite a few species of fish that are being dyed now. It is a very cruel practice. Look up white skirt tetra online--that is what your fish looks like naturally. Don't feel bad that you bought this fish without knowing, just make an effort not to support the practice in the future.

Reply:Yes they are injected with color. But I never heard of them being called fruit loops. I have always heard of them being called "painted glass fish."

The color usually fades in time.
Reply:probably-thats how the make the colored neons
Reply:yes they are. I don't like that idea, and usually buy the fish with natural coloring. They are called Painted Glass fish, but I didn't know they call them "Fruit Loops". Odd name. The color fades in time, but I still disapprove of it. It's so stupid! It looks so fake.
Reply:I have heard this too, only called Painted Glass. I have had them before, they are pretty hardy, but the color fades with time.
Reply:Yes, they are being injected with flourescent dye to make them more saleable. It's all about the money with no thought to the stress and agony the fish suffers. Approximately 50% of the fish die during the injection and the ones who survive do not live a healthy life. The very few that last more than a year are the exception. Normally these fish live around 5 years.

An even worse way that fish are being colored is the total body dye that is done. First the fish is put into a mild acid bath that strips the bacteria blocking slime coat off their body and etches their scales so the dye will soak in. Then they are put into dye tanks to color them for various holidays. Red and green for Christmas; pink, pastel blue, pastel green for easter; red, white and blue for the 4th of July. About 80% of these fish die during the coloring process.

If people would just stop buying them, the torture would stop. As long as there is a market for them, they will be dyed and sold.

The problem is, that the dye fades away after a month or so and the owner is left with a fish that is white or pale pink and not at all like the fish they thought they were buying.
Reply:Yes and no, glass fish are and have been injected with dye, I thought they were calling them Mixed Fruit Tetras though, not Fruit Lopps but it is a possibilty. Please dont support dyed fish. It is a cruel and inhumane thing done to fish. Here is a site that tells you about it.
